66 Medieval Finlaggan A virtual reconstruction of the Lords of the Isles' medieval residence on Loch Finlaggan. The tour shows the site as it may have looked in the fifteenth century - when the Lordship of the Isles was still a major power in Western Scotland. The reconstruction was commissioned by the Finlaggan Trust, and created by Smart History / University of St Andrews with advice from Dr David Caldwell. 67 The Finlaggan Cross 3D model of a carved stone cross-head that was excavated on the island of Eilean Mor in Loch Finlaggan on Islay. Finlaggan was the traditional ceremonial and administrative centre of the medieval Lordship of the Isles. The cross-head was discovered near the former chapel of the Lords of the Isles (although it predates the surviving chapel ruins). The cross was set in a stone plinth, which was found nearby. The shaft of the cross is now missing, and the plinth showed signs of it having been violently removed (perhaps in the mid seventeenth century). The cross dates from around the fourteenth century, and was probably produced by local craftsmen. It has some similarities with medieval crosses at Kildalton and Kilarrow (also on Islay). 73 Finlaggan Finlaggan was the heart of the Lordship of the Isles. In the Middle Ages the Lords of the Isles had a major residence here on the two islands of Eilean Mor (or Large Isle) and Eilean na Comhairle (or Council Isle), towards the north end of Loch Finlaggan. Some archaeologists believe that new Lords of the Isles were inaugurated on the hill called Cnoc Seannda (or Old Knoll) just beside the modern Finlaggan Trust visitor centre. Today the Finlaggan Trust cares for Eilean Mor and Eilean na Comhairle – once the scene of ceremonies, councils, and feasting. 87 Loch Ballygrant During the sixteenth century Loch Ballygrant played a key role in a rising to reinstate the Lordship of the Isles. In the 1540s Donald Dubh (grandson of John MacDonald, who was deposed as Lord of the Isles in 1493) reclaimed his ancestors’ titles of ‘Lord of the Isles and Earl of Ross’. In July 1545 Donald and his supporters met at Ballygrant, where they agreed to send representatives to negotiate with Henry VIII of England. Donald offered to provide military aid to Henry VIII against the Scottish government. However, the English failed to capitalise on the opportunity posed by the rising, and it was ultimately unsuccessful. 89 Pier of the Lords In the Middle Ages the sea was a highway. Travel by boat was often easier than on land. Medieval Islay was connected to a network of islands and coastal communities across Northern Europe. On the north end of Loch Indaal there was an early pier. Later accounts claim this was a harbour for the Lords of the Isles. The old road across Islay ran from Loch Indaal up towards Finlaggan – reflecting the historic importance of these places. By the eighteenth century the pier was in ruins, but the foundations can still be seen. Immovable Heritage Monday 08th of April 2024 03:43:53 PM Monday 08th of April 2024 03:43:53 PM EDM

93 Claig Castle Claig Castle sits on the small island of Am Fraoch Eilean. It controlled access to the south end of the Sound of Islay. The castle was probably built in the fifteenth century. It was a traditional tower-house, with two cellars on the ground-floor. There may have been a hall on the floor above. To the west of the castle is a ravine – probably crossed in the Middle Ages by a bridge. The Lords of the Isles sometimes sent prisoners to Claig Castle. By the eighteenth century the castle was ruinous. In the 1770s the travel writer Thomas Pennant claimed the remains of the walls were nine feet thick. 95 Dunyvaig (Castle of the Ships) Dunyvaig Castle was once a key stronghold of the Lords of the Isles. It may have been built to protect the anchorage in Lagavulin Bay, and was perhaps a residence for Somerled (twelfth-century King of the Isles). Dunyvaig was confiscated by the Scottish crown in 1493, when James IV crushed the power of the Lords of the Isles. 99 Game Piece 3D model of a game piece. This bone gaming piece probably dates from the 15th century. It shows a zoomorphic shape on the front, probably a unicorn (also interpreted as a stag) on the front, while the back is plain. It resembles a tableman, a piece used in playing backgammon. It was excavated on Eilean Mor on Loch Finlaggan. A number of items associated with board games were discovered in excavations at the former residence of the Lords of the Isles at Loch Finlaggan on Islay (in Western Scotland). Islay had a long tradition of board games, influenced by both Norse and Gaelic culture.
